With six games down, Bothell Football stands tall with an unblemished record and impressive wins over Woodinville (46-3) and Mount Si (43-13). First-ranked in 4A, the Blue Train came into the season with high expectations and all eyes on them. Earning a spot in USA Today's High School Poll at 39th in the nation, the Cougars and Coach Tom Bainter are hungry for their first ever state title.
Tomorrow night, the Cougs will square off against the Skyline Spartans on the plateau to try and seal the KingCo Championship. The last time Bothell came out on top against Skyline was back in 2009 when they tacked on a TD in the waning minutes to win the KingCo Championship 25-20. Bothell will try to remain undefeated against a struggling Spartans team that has lost two of its last three.
The offense, equipped with many top recruits such as Cal-commit Ross Bowers and Sam McPherson, has been dominant all year long, racking up 2,634 total yards through six games. They have scored 254 points, 183 of which have been in the first half. Much of this has been with the help of big-time receiver Dayzell Wilson, who has made several fantastic catches so far. The offense isn't the only thing that has shined at Pop Keeney though.
Bothell's defensive corps is a force to be reckoned with and includes some unstoppable linebackers in Shawn Munro, Tyler Wharf, and Jacob Johnston. They have proved to be almost insurmountable, giving up less than 70 points all year and only 1,632 total yards. In addition, the Cougar defense has seven takeaways this season, two safeties, and has made several goal line stops.
The Blue Train has given the students something to cheer for; that's for sure. Bothell's student section has created an atmosphere unmatched anywhere else in the state. Pop Keeney truly has been the place to be in Bothell on Friday nights. With crunch time closing in, the students need to continue to step up and give the team motivation as they make their run. This all starts tomorrow. With a free rooter bus provided for students, tailgate including free pizza, and prime student section location, the team is pulling out all the stops to try to make their trip to Skyline a glorified home game. Students that have come to the conclusion that they don't feel like going should seriously reconsider, as it is liable to one of the most entertaining games of the year.
Wear blue, be loud, and support the boys from B-Town. See you tomorrow night.
